Poetry Day 15

Day 15: Making News Your Muse
When I first saw the prompt for today, I immediately thought of
Lupe Fiasco's song Words I Never Said.
One line in particular jumped out at me after reading about the government shut down of course:
"...Your child's future was the first to go with budget cuts
If you think that hurts, then wait here comes the uppercut
The school was garbage in the first place, that's on the up and up..."
I won't be talking about politics or the government shut down,
But this is the headline that jumped out at me and is my platform for today's topic:

Can I get Closer?
I already feel so close to you.
Through my mind, body, heart, and soul.
Yet, I feel a distance-literally and figuratively
Because every time you take one step forward
I take two steps back,
I don't know why. Am I scared?
Are there words that I haven't said to one you?
There are so many thoughts racing inside my head
With words I should have said,
With words I could have said,
Feeling I should have expressed.
But here's my chance to have them not be words that I never said.
I will no longer live with regrets.
I want to be closer to you,
But I realize that can only happen if I let myself.
So, Can I get closer?
Yes, I can if I try
Day after day,
Month after month,
Year after year.
I can only get closer
If I allow myself to.
I know that you'll help me.
Everything is getting louder in my head,
please help me.
I don't want to live with regrets and
have words that were never said.
So, Can I get Closer?
Yes I can, but only if
I'm willing to take that leap, only if
I'm willing to get hurt, only if
I'm willing to be patient and understand who you are.
So, Can I get closer?
Yes, I can, but only if I let myself.

  1. Great what you did with the prompt and how you interpreted the news piece. Really cool.

  2. I like your take on the prompt, very nice.

  3. How clearly you describe the risks we take in getting close to a loved one -- or someone we want to love. That photo does not look intimate at all, yet you transform "getting closer" beautifully into a poem that inspires growth.
